Tactical Plate Carrier

A tactop plate carrier (also known as a plate carrier or back pack armor unit) is an specially designed kind of vests meant for fast and quick deployment by military and police personnel. They are most often used in counterinsurgency campaigns as light personal body armor, which is the equivalent to body armor designed specifically for use against high caliber firearms. Although it may sound futuristic to some, there have been many advances in technology over the past decade that have made it possible for tactical vests like the ones used by the Special Forces, to be used by ordinary people.

Three Different Types Of Tactical Gear

As a generalization, the better the quality of the hard armor used is the better it is for home defense applications and personal protection. This applies to vests, hard armor backpacks, and other items that are designed for close-quarter battle. Although there are a few exceptions, for the most part the better the quality of the vest or backpack armor, the better the option for personal defense.

The Changing Face of Armor

As an armor system for the USMC’s future battle space vehicles the use of soft armor and hard armor should be differentiated. Soft armor is the armor used in ballistically controlled full size mock subjects, where penetration testing is not performed. Hard armor is the armor used for modular handheld vests and plate carriers in the future environments that will see the use of body armor for protection from lethal and non-lethal projectiles. A future system should not only use soft armor but it should use hard armor as well. It is also important to note that the future world of modular systems and balance of forces will require the armor types used in such systems to change for the terrain the vehicle will be fighting on.
